Wangari Maathai: Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.

Hello everyone,
January 30th : School Day of Non-Violence and Peace.
Why is it celebrated today? Who founded this day?
Do you know this woman?
What's her name? Where is she from? When was she born? Is she alive or dead? What did she do?

Her name is Wangari Maathai. She was the first black woman who received the Nobel Peace Prize.
She founded the  Green Belt Movement. She had a fantastic initiative: to plant trees in forested areas in Kenya. She tought there was an important link between the environment and peace.
Information taken from: Encyclopedia of World Biography.

Here you can read some of her famous quotes:
"When we plant trees, we plant the seeds of peace and hope".
"There are opportunities even in the most difficult moments".
"The generation that destroys the environment is not the generation that pays the price. That is the problem".

Let's watch this film tribute to Wangari Maathai.

This is one of my favourite books.
