1990. Mandela left prison.

The South African President, F. W. De Klerk told Mandela, "You can leave prison. You must help me change South Africa", Mandela said, "I will". Mandela became head of the ANC.
He visited London for the International Tribute to free South Africa, celebrated in Wembley Stadium. Mandela said to the audience of 72,000, "Do not listen to anyone who says you must give up the struggle against apartheid".

1993. Nobel Peace Prize
In 1993 Nelson Mandela and De Klerk both won the Nobel peace prize. They won it because they stopped Apartheid, they helped people in South Africa to have equal rights.

1994. Mandela President.
In 1994 Mandela became the first black President of South Africa. He was seventy-four years old. He started his term on 10 May, 1994. Mandela marked the moment apartheid was buried once and for all. Mandela said: "Never, never and never again shall this beautiful land again experience the oppression of one by another".

1995. Nelson Mandela won the Rugby World Cup.
Mandela used the Springboks team (The South African National Rugby team) to reconcile whites with the black majority. After the Springboks won an epic final over New Zealand, Mandela presented the trophy to captain François Pienaar, an Afrikaner, wearing a Springbok shirt with Pienaar's own number 6 on the back.

It was a great step in the reconciliation of white and black South Africans. 
"Not in my wildest dreams did I think that Nelson Mandela would pitch up at the final wearing a Springbok on his heart, South African's captain on that day. François Pienaar said some time later. "When he walked into our changing room to say good luck to us, he turned around and my number was on his back.

"Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way little else does", Mandela said in a speech five years after that match.

1999. En of term.
Mandela ended his first and only term as president on 14 June 1999. He was succeeded by Mbeki. Mandela retired from active politics and became for several years, engaged in philanthropic activities. 

2013. Dead at 95.
In June 2004 Mandela was 85 and he retired from public life. He said: "Don't call me, I will call you". One year later, 2005 he announced his son was dead due to an HIV/Aids-related illness.
Last Thursday, 5 December, Mandela died at his home in Soweto. There are people of all ages, creeds and colors singing and saying prayers for Madiba in Cape Town, South Africa.
