Chinese New Year 2016: Year of the Monkey.

Hello everyone,
Welcome to the Chinese New Year of the Red Fire Monkey according to the Chinese Zodiac. Why is it called Red Fire Monkey? The monkey is clever, energetic and inventive.



Chinese New Year is also called Spring Festival and it has got more than 4000 years of history. It started during the Hang Dinasty to fight against the monster "Nian", It has links with the five elements because ancient Chinese believed the universe was composed.


The monster Nian ate children and farm animals but it was afraid of light colours and loud sound.
It is the grandest and the most important event for Chinese people. It's a time for enjoying family and friends and remembering ancestors.




People usually give gift of red envelopes of lucky money. There are a lot of ancient customs, superstitions and stories about Chinese New Year.
